How to play blackjack

  1. Place your bet. Tap the chips to build a bet, then press Deal.
  2. Check your cards. You get two cards face up. The dealer gets one face up and one face down.
  3. Make your move. Hit to take a card, Stand to keep your total, Double to double your bet and take exactly one card, Split to turn a pair into two hands, or Surrender to give up half your bet.
  4. Watch the dealer. The dealer reveals the hidden card and draws until reaching 17 or more.
  5. Compare hands. Closest to 21 without going over wins. Going over 21 is a bust and loses immediately.

Cards 2 to 10 count their face value, jacks, queens and kings count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11, whichever helps you more. A hand with an ace counted as 11 is called a soft hand: soft 17 is an ace and a 6.

The rules at this table

RuleSetting

Dealer peeks for blackjackYes, with an ace or 10-value card showing
Double downOn any first two cards, also after splitting
SplitsUp to 4 hands; split aces get one card each

These are player-friendly rules, similar to many Las Vegas Strip tables. A dealer who stands on soft 17 and a 3:2 blackjack payout both work in your favor.

Three tips that change your results

  • Stand on 12 to 16 when the dealer shows 2 to 6 (except 12 against a 2 or 3). The dealer is the one most likely to bust.
  • Always split aces and 8s. Two hands starting with 8 are far better than one 16.
  • Double 11 against anything but an ace. It is the best doubling hand in the game.

These come from basic strategy, the mathematically best play for every hand. See the full basic strategy chart, or drill it hand by hand in the Blackjack Trainer.

Free blackjack FAQ

Is this blackjack game really free?

Yes. You start with 10,000 free coins, and if you run out you can refill them for free. You can’t buy coins, cash them out or win prizes.

Do I need to download anything or sign up?

No. The game runs in your browser on desktop and mobile. Your coin balance is saved on your device.

Are the cards random?

Yes. The game shuffles a 6-deck shoe using your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, and reshuffles when about a quarter of the shoe remains.

Why is there no insurance bet?

Basic strategy never takes insurance: over time it costs more than it saves. We left it out so you can focus on the decisions that matter.

Can I use what I learn here at a real casino?

Basic strategy is the same math casinos use, but no strategy removes the house edge. Blitz is for fun and learning only. If you choose to gamble elsewhere, set limits and read our responsible gaming page.
